If you haven’t noticed, it’s incredibly hot outside!  The dreaded North Florida Summer Heat is upon us and attacking in full force.  Spending more than one hour outside seems like a death sentence.  Most people take shelter in their homes to escape the sweltering heat.  But the sun seems to disrespect this boundary; homes across Jacksonville, Florida are struggling to stay cool while air conditioning systems max out their output and homeowners sacrifice precious dollars paying their energy bills.  No one can stop the heat; but there is a solution that can help keep the heat out of our homes and it starts with the roof!

Roofs are the first line of defense against North Florida’s sun and its thermal assault on our homes.  The surface area of roofs takes the brunt of the assault, reaching temperatures of 170+ degrees.  While some of this heat stays on the roof’s surface, a good portion of the heat seeps into our attics and our living spaces.  What can be done to strengthen our roofs’ defenses against the North Florida sun?  Ventilation, radiant barriers, and Owens Corning’s Duration Premium COOL Shingles.

One of the main culprits causing excessive heat to build up in our attics is lack of ventilation.  The United States (U.S.) Federal House Authority (FHA) recommends a  minimum of one (1) square foot of attic ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic floor space or a “Net Free Area” of 1:150.  Most shingle manufacturers recommend one (1) square foot of ventilation for up to every 150 square feet of attic floor space or more for optimal ventilation.  How can this be accomplished?

Ridge Line Venting

If you’re building a new home or replacing your existing roof, opt for a Ridge Line Venting system, such as Owens Corning VentSure® Rigid Roll Ridge Vent, instead of the traditional off ridge venting system.  Depending on the amount of ridge line, you could more than double the amount of “Net Free Area” of ventilation.  Ridge Line Venting systems also place the heat’s escape route in the most optimal place in your attic – the ridge.  The ridge is the highest point in your roof/attic and, since heat rises, is the most natural place for heat to escape effortlessly.

Mechanical Venting

When a roof’s ridge line is minimal or your attic space is too large for a traditional venting system to allow the heat to escape effortlessly, opt for a Mechanical Venting system.  A Mechanical Venting system consists of power fans that pull (or draw) the heat out of your attic and decreases your attic’s temperature more effectively.  Solar powered attic fans, such as Attic Breeze®’s Self Flashing Solar Attic Fans, are the most efficient form of a Mechanical Venting system.  Solar powered attic fans absorb sunlight, transforming it into usable energy that flows through to your home’s electrical panel and gets distributed accordingly.  This, effectively, costs you nothing to run and can save you countless dollars on your home’s energy bills.

Radiant Barriers

In addition to proper ventilation, installing a radiant barrier, like our Genesis Roof Underlayment,  can beef up your home’s defenses against the sun’s relentless heat.   Our Genesis Roof Underlayment helps to counteract the sun’s harmful rays.  When homeowners think about a roof underlayment, most likely they picture asphalt felt paper.  However, our Genesis Roof Underlayment has revolutionized the roofing industry because it works for you.

Our Genesis Roof Underlayment acts as an underlayment by absorbing moisture and acts as an insulator by repelling the sun’s heat.  Installed correctly, our Genesis Roof Underlayment seals around fasteners, provides a complete vapor barrier, and stops radiant heat from entering your precious attic space.  Our Genesis Roof Underlayment can be retrofitted to your attic; no need to replace your roof to enjoy its benefits.  Our Genesis Roof Underlayment pays for itself by saving you money on your energy bills.
